With any type of Adoption chosen: You can change your mind at any point until you sign the consent papers 48 hours after the child is born. Types of Legal Adoption 1. Confidential or Closed - Adoptive family receives non-identifying medical and social history.
- No communication between parties is expected.
- No Identifying information is shared between birth parents and adoptive families.
2. Semi-Open - Birth parents and adoptive parents maintain contact with each other after the adoption finalizes through a third party, such as an agency or attorney.
- Examples are letters and pictures, or gifts.
- Direct contact may occasionally occur usually at the agency or pre-arranged meeting place.
3. Disclosed or Open Adoption - Full disclosure of identifying information between parties occurs.
- Contact between birth and adoptive family is direct.
No two open adoptions are the same. Contact may be spontaneous or previously determined by both parties. Adoptive parents are in control of the level of openness.
4. Kinship/Relative Adoption - In many states a close relative can adopt with a less intense procedure.
